Economy requires carefully planned policies

NIGERIANS have endured a month of rising adversity as President Bola Tinubu unleashed a barrage of shock measures. The naira crashed toover N800 to $1 midweek before settling to N775/$1 by weekend. Higher electricity tariffs are imminent; more multinational firms are heading for the exit door; inflation is reaching for the sky, and about 7.1 million more persons are forecast to plunge into extreme poverty. Beyond drastic decisions, Tinubu should adopt thorough planning, preparation, and fallback measures to avoid creating bigger problems than he set out to solve.

For an economy of over 200 million persons, 63.6 percent of whom are living in penury, Africa’s largest, disarticulated, often dysfunctional, driven largely by the informal sector, and built on weak, compromised institutions, drastic policies must be preceded by exhaustive planning. Additionally, there must be simultaneous programmes to raise state capacity, protect the most vulnerable, and manage the inevitable fallout.

Thugs Attack, Flog PDP Members At Ogun Tribunal Premises

....as  Security Agents Watch

The Ogun State Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta on Monday commenced hearing of the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, against Dapo Abiodun of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reports has it that both the APC and the PDP mobilised their members to be at the tribunal for solidarity.

However, political thugs stormed the venue of the tribunal with canes, otherwise known as pankere, attacking perceived opponents while police officers watched, the men of the DSS were however able to restore calm to the area.

Although the road leading to the court was barricaded at both ends by the police, it did not prevent the hoodlums from attacking their targets.

As the political thugs roamed about with canes in their hands, the police made no attempt to arrest or stop them from causing chaos.
A policeman said, “there is nothing we can do, we can’t arrest them. Everything about Ogun is always different.”

A PDP member, who was attacked by the thugs, said he lost his phone, money and other valuables in his possession while being beaten.

As of the time of filing this report, members of the PDP have fled the court premises to avoid further attacks.

DAILY POST reports that attacking opposition members at the tribunal has now become a dangerous trend in Ogun after every election.

NLC To Commence Nationwide Strike On Wednesday

....., If PMS Price Isn't Reverted

The Nigeria Labour Congess (NLC) has declared a nationwide strike from next Wednesday.

This comes amid fuel shortages across the country occasioned by President Bola Tinubu’s inaugural speech in which he declared that “fuel subsidy is gone”.

NLC President Joe Ajaero made the announcement after an emergency meeting of the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) in Abuja.

He said the government, particularly the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited had up until Wednesday next week to revert to the old price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) otherwise referred to as petrol.

Ajaero added that failure of the Federal Government to meet the ultimatum would attract an indefinite protest across the country.

The Venture Capitalist Funding Gap: Are Northern Nigerian Start-Ups Left Behind?

...Why Northern Nigerian Start-Ups Are Being Left Behind
By Surayyah Ahmad

Nigeria’s startup ecosystem is booming, with a growing number of innovative companies emerging across the country. However, there is a stark divide between startups in the northern and southern regions of Nigeria when it comes to securing venture capital (VC) funding. Northern Nigerian startups are being left behind, and this has serious implications for the region’s economic development and tech innovation.

Northern Nigeria is home to a large portion of Nigeria’s population, with an estimated 100 million people residing in the region. However, when it comes to attracting VC funding, the region lags behind the southern region, which includes Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital. According to a report by Techpoint Africa, Lagos-based startups attracted 85% of all VC funding in Nigeria in 2020, leaving just 15% for startups in other regions.

Google Opens Access to Bard AI Chatbot...

...Racing to Catch Up to OpenAI
By Saundra Latham, Editor at LinkedIn News

Google is finally granting the public access to its ChatGPT competitor, called Bard. Users in the US and UK can sign up for a waitlist for the conversational AI service, starting today.

But... Bard still has limits. Rachel Metz and I asked it for tips on how to celebrate a birthday party on Mars, and Bard suggested that we plan the trip well in advance, telling us, "It takes about nine months to get to Mars." And it told us we needed a permit from NASA as well as approvals from the Martian government to hold the party. A bit more for Google to work out in future iterations of the product.
