The Most Internet-Addicted Country in the World

By Winifred Okocha, Editor at LinkedIn News

Spending at least 9.5 hours a day online in 2022, people in South Africa are the world's most internet-addicted country, Quartz reports, citing a report by Delaware-based VPN platform Atlas VPN.

The amount of time South Africans spend online exceeded the global figure by roughly three hours, the study showed, with the average time spent online being six hours and 37 minutes.

Brazil and the Philippines rounded off the top three nations in terms of internet addiction. South Africa plans to ensure web access to all homes by 2024.

World Bank data shows that in 2020 up to 70% of South Africans had internet access. While a digital detox is almost impossible for some, practising "digital mindfulness" can be one method of attempting to control internet browsing.

The impact of load shedding is likely to have contributed to the amount of time South Africans can spend online and their eagerness to stay connected during power cuts, when most cellphone networks struggle to meet data demands.
