Google Beefs Up Search With AI

Yesterday Google introduced how it will be unleashing generative AI to supercharge search results. Some SEOs are worried, here's why I'm bullish:

For those that didn't watch Google I/O, here's a quick summary:

• Google has launched an AI-powered Search engine, code-named Magi, which offers AI-generated answers, links to source websites, and allows for deeper response exploration.

• It includes a conversational mode for follow-up queries and utilises various Language Learning Models (LLMs) trained specifically for Search.

• Google is cautious with sensitive topics (medical, financial) and prioritises informative, reliable responses, avoiding low-confidence or explicit content.

• The new system links to source websites (still not citations), unlike previous iterations like Google Bard, supporting a healthier ecosystem and providing factual corroboration across sources.

I think Google has got this right. The popularity of ChatGPT has exposed the shortcomings of some search results, particularly those where there are various answers and intent.

Google is a two-way system and it's a fine balance between doing what's right for users and satisfying publishers. One can't live without the other.

In the US, there is a waitlist (English-only) for testing this, and I'm confident that Google will use it to assess a comprehensive set of standards that meet the needs of both publishers and users.

Google understands that intentionally harming publisher traffic in search results would inevitably result in its own demise.

I'm excited by the new dawn of search, and look forward to adapting to it.
